EV Revolution in the UAE: What to Expect?

    sustainablity

For years, the UAE was renowned for its oil reserves, which helped the nation flourish over five decades. As the nation grew and stabilized, efforts have been underway to diversify the economy and build a more sustainable future. Today, the country boasts of an opulent lifestyle, striking skyline, and immense business opportunities open for the world to explore, while exploring newer, better, and greener ways to stay ahead of the crowd.

Sustainability has been one of the top priorities for the UAE’s government in the past decade. The government has been continuously working to adopt sustainable technologies, among which the Electric Vehicle (EV) market has particularly emerged as a notable one. Positioned at the forefront of the global shift towards environmental consciousness, the UAE is actively embracing the electric vehicle revolution.

In this blog, let’s take a few minutes to understand the present landscape of the UAE’s electric vehicle market, the factors propelling its expansion, and the future outlook for EVs in the nation.

    EVs and sustainability: The basics

Electric vehicles (EVs) are recognized for their sustainability. These vehicles are especially sustainable due to their zero-tailpipe emissions and higher energy efficiency compared to traditional vehicles. EVs, as their name suggests, rely on electricity as their primary energy source and contribute to lower carbon footprints in regions with abundant renewable energy sources. Additionally, EVs reduce dependency on finite fossil fuels and offer the potential for vehicle-to-grid integration, enhancing energy security and grid stability while mitigating overall environmental impact.

EVs are also quieter than traditional vehicles reducing noise pollution in urban areas. Overall, their combination of emission reduction, energy efficiency, and potential for renewable energy integration positions EVs as a key component of sustainable transportation solutions, thereby playing a pivotal role in transitioning towards a cleaner and sustainable future.

    UAE’s EV landscape

According to the Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index 2023 (GEMRIX),  UAE is currently ranking 7th globally in EV readiness, leading the way in EV adoption in the MENA region. There have been several factors that have led to this which are discussed below-

    • Government initiatives

The UAE government is particularly interested in improving the country’s transportation infrastructure, incorporating green technologies that promise a more sustainable future for the nation. In line with the country’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2050, the share of EVs on the roads is expected to increase over the next two decades. To support this change the government is bringing in infrastructural and policy changes that encourage and enable the residents of the country to move to using more EVs.

    • Charging infrastructure

To enable more EVs on the road, the UAE government has been proactively developing a charging infrastructure throughout the country. These robust charging stations are available everywhere- from large shopping malls to remote regions. For any EV owner, one of the biggest challenges is to find reliable charging stations, especially on longer rides. With this advanced infrastructure providing an extensive array of charging stations including fast-charging options, EV adoption and ownership will become easier.

    • Incentives and rebates

To actively encourage EV adoption, the UAE government is also providing various incentives and rebates for early adopters. For instance, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has exempted EVs registered in Dubai from public parking fees for a two-year period, which came into effect on July 21st, 2020. Additionally, the RTA also offers complimentary Salik (toll) tags for EVs registered within Dubai. Apart from this, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) introduced an incentive back on September 1st, 2017, that provided free charging for all EV users who enrolled in the DEWA EV Green Charger Initiative. This was later extended until 31st December, to be considerate of non-commercial EV users.

Previously, Etihad Water and Electricity in the country had also launched a free charging incentive until the end of 2020 within the Northern Emirates on their public EV charging network. Abu Dhabi had also allowed toll exemptions for EVs until the end of 2020.

    The impact

As a result of these changes, the demand for EVs has risen over the past few years. According to the global electric mobility readiness index published in 2022, the projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for EVs is 30% between 2022 and 2028 in the UAE market. During the Electric Vehicles Innovation Summit (EVIS 2023) in Abu Dhabi, His Highness Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, stated that EVs are integral for the UAE’s shift towards a green transport future. By building a wider network of EV charging stations nationwide, the government is looking to make this transition smoother.

Today, the nation moves ahead with the Green Mobility Drive, to increase the share of electric cars on the road to 50% of total vehicles by 2050. Amid this, Dubai’s EV numbers have already reached nearly 226,000 in 2023, thanks to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (Dewa) network of public charging stations. It was also noted that the use of Dewa’s green charging stations for EVs also rose to 59 percent year-on-year in 2023. Currently, Dewa has installed 382 EV green charging stations across Dubai, many of which have dual charging outlets.

    Takeaway

The EV market in the UAE is expected to rise tremendously over the coming years thanks to government initiatives and growing interest among the people to move towards green transportation. Fueled by a combination of incentives, the continual enhancement of charging infrastructure, and the presence of renowned manufacturers such as Tesla, the nation is transitioning towards an eco-conscious and sustainable future. Embracing electric vehicles as a pivotal solution in combating climate change, the UAE stands out as a regional trailblazer in sustainable mobility, underlining its steadfast commitment to the EV revolution.
