Collaborative initiatives between the government, businesses, and communities further enhance efforts to transition to eco-friendly alternatives, positioning the UAE as a leader in addressing this critical environmental challenge.

The current status quo

A report from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in 2018 revealed that global plastic production reached approximately 400 million tons in 2015. Of this total, 36%—around 144 million tons—consisted of single-use plastic packaging. Alarmingly, only 9% of all plastics are recycled, while 12% are incinerated. The remaining 79% end up in landfills or are released into the environment.

In the UAE alone, estimates tell us that approximately 3.5 million tons of plastic waste annually, with only a fraction being recycled. These facilities are designed to process plastic waste efficiently, converting it into recycled materials that can be reused in manufacturing.  For instance, Tadweer Group has announced the completion of the bidding process for the development of Abu Dhabi’s first greenfield Material Recovery Facility (MRF). This state-of-the-art facility will recover recyclable materials from municipal solid waste, greatly enhancing waste diversion from landfills by facilitating recycling and preparing feedstock 

for the Abu Dhabi Waste to Energy facility. 

The introduction of chemical recycling methods, which can break down plastics into their original monomers, has also allowed for a wider variety of plastics to be recycled, enhancing the circular economy. This not only reduces landfill waste but also lessens the need for virgin plastic production.

Research and Development

Investment in research and development is vital for discovering new sustainable materials and innovative recycling processes. The UAE’s universities and research centers are conducting studies focused on alternative materials, such as bio-based plastics or enhanced recycling techniques. One noteworthy project is by Cycled Technologies, a company based in the UAE, and Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, collaborating on an AI-driven method that they believe could lead to a significant advancement in plastic waste recycling.

The UAE actively participates in international forums focused on sustainability, such as the UN Environment Programme. Back in 2022 during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the UAE joined the coalition to support the elimination of plastic pollution by 2040, ahead of hosting COP28 in 2023.
